Guide to Understanding Artificial Intelligence (AI) for Business Leaders

Introduction

The topic of AI exploded in 2023, thanks to the launch of ChatGPT in November 2022. By the end of January 2023, ChatGPT had become the fastest growing consumer software application in history, with more than 100 million users.

The success of ChatGPT kicked off a scramble within seemingly every tech company to launch their own AI assistant or AI bot features. AI feature announcements started hitting the tech news sites weekly, if not daily, to the point that most people became overwhelmed.

How overwhelming is AI for the average business technology user?

Consider these SaaS statistics (from explodingtopics.com):

  • Small businesses with fewer than 50 employees use an average of 16 software apps
  • Small businesses with 50-99 employees average 24 software apps
  • Businesses with 100-499 employees average 47 software apps
  • Companies with 1,000+ employees average 177 software apps

Each software app that adds AI capabilities introduces a learning curve to their user base. Users must go through the process of reading or watching videos about the AI features to determine if and how they will use them. It is a process that is time-consuming and often unproductive.

How can business leaders better understand the potential of AI for business?

The true potential of AI goes way beyond ChatGPT or AI bots built into the software apps your business is using. But as long as business leaders remain focused on (i.e. distracted by) the AI features of their existing software apps, they will miss the bigger picture of what AI technology can accomplish for their business when applied to money-saving and money-making business initiatives.

This guide includes summary articles from the 2023 Artificial Intelligence Summit for Business, which featured talks on Data and AI, AI for Automation, Security & AI, and ESG, Sustainability, and AI.
